Positive manifold pressure is a good thing. That's what Don and Scott Crouse are saying about their 368ci small-block Ford. But there's nothing small about 1,305 hp. The combination consists of a pair of CNC-ported Edelbrock Victor cylinder heads and a monster ATI Procharger centrifugal blower pushing a ton of air. This was Scott's first attempt at building a race motor, and the experience could be condensed down to just two words: "Nothing fit." But once Scott got past the custom-parts headaches, custom machine work, and a disastrous first try on the dyno, the effort paid off big-time with four-figure power numbers. Scott even says this dyno test was aimed at "making as much torque as possible while taking advantage of the engine's relatively small displacement. A second camshaft is capable of making substantially more peak power, but it has yet to be tested." Mainly, Scott says, he just wants to have fun with his dad at the track. That shouldn't be difficult as long as hp = fun

The Return of The 4.6 Junkyard Jewel

In search of more power with a Junkyard Jewel 4.6L two-valve Mod motor, we try different headers, carburetors, and intake porting.

We don't usually do updates or two-part features on our Junkyard Jewels, but we walked away a little dissatisfied with the first round of testing on our $400, 117,000-mile Crown Vic refugee in the Apr. '08 issue. We just didn't have enough dyno time to get to know the MSD 6 MOD ignition better and find the tune our mod motor was most happy with. We knew we'd left power on the table, so we went back to Dyno-Motive in Placentia, California, with a few different parts to try, along with master tuner Harvey St. Mary of HMS Performance in Whittier, California, as our secret weapon. We have a slightly revised parts list, but we won't be cracking a single seal on our long-block from the last round. Everything will be tuning or bolt-on in nature. Did we hit our goal of 1 hp per dollar of the original junkyard purchase price? Read on to find out.

This Ford Ranger is on Fire!

We've all been there before, at one time or another. You're in your garage, working on your truck, yanking that blown motor out and getting ready to swap in a small-block. Then while you're there, you decide to clean up the frame and build new tubular control arms, and because you're going to build new arms, why not just build a new frame? Well, that my friends is the inevitable snowball effect that has now become known as "Mike Alexander Syndrome." Yes, it's true. I can't seem to finish a truck. Okay, I get it. But it just seems that the "while we're there" excuse isn't working for me anymore. The story of this Ranger hit home for me because after years of my own personal battle trying to build the perfect mini, I'm finally looking down the final stretch and about to round third and make the mad dash for home plate. But enough about me, back to this badass Ranger that sits before you.

Looking around the parking lots at Georgia Tech, in Atlanta, there aren't too many good-looking rides besides the occasional Boss 302 Mustang.
